S.S.A. No.3 Par Dijon France April 6th 1916 My Dear Mother, Two letters & a paper sent on by you came today. We get our post about 4 p.m. later than at the last place … I see new budget in papers today, your income will not be further affected, under £500 3/6 in £ & now you just are under that. I think it is a very clear speech McKenna made; wonderful the amount of revenue all this will bring in. Very glad motors & theatres & cinema shows are going to be taxed & soft drinks, quite right, it all seems very fair. The rich man can afford 5/- in £ … Verdun news seem to keep good … I see Zepps went over 3 nights running, but not London. S.S.A. No.3 Par Dijon France April 11th 1916 My Dear Mother No letter from you since I arrived a week ago tonight, but 2 Aust. Papers sent on came yesterday & my other papers I ordered … Mr Tarbutt leaves today much to our regret, he is such a good fellow & all got on so well with him, Frank Hargreaves comes out as Commandant for some time now, 4 or 5 months probably … One hears guns at Verdun, they seem to be struggling there … Most comfortable in my Billet & orderly does my room, lays my bath, boots, clothes etc so am well fixed. Sun pours into my room in morng. Some lovely walks about. Dejeuner bell Best love Yr affect son Arthur |
